Multiplication Practice
Continue to practice your multiplication facts on aaamath website. Remember the skills you learn in all year long builds on multiplication. A good foundation will never fail you.
Love-Hate Analogy
When multiplying and dividing integers, you can think of it as a love-hate analogy.
Love represents a positive integer (+).
Hate represents a negative integer (-).
Love(+) Hate(-)
If you LOVE(+) to LOVE(+), then you LOVE(+).
Love represents a positive integer (+).
Hate represents a negative integer (-).
Love(+) Hate(-)
If you LOVE(+) to LOVE(+), then you LOVE(+).
If you HATE(-) to HATE(-), then you LOVE(+).
If you LOVE(+) to HATE(-), then you HATE(-).
If you HATE(-) to LOVE(+), then you HATE(-).
If you LOVE(+) to HATE(-), then you HATE(-).
If you HATE(-) to LOVE(+), then you HATE(-).
So, the rules for multiplying integers are as followed
-positive # times positive # equals a positive # => 3 x 4 = 12
-negative # times negative # equals a positive # => -2 x -3 = 6
-positive # times negative # equals a negative #=> 5 x -2 = -10
-negative # times positive # equals a negative #=> -4 x 6 = -24
The same rules apply for dividing integers
-positive # divided by positive # equals a positive #=> 12 ÷ 4 = 3
-negative # divided by negative # equals a positive #=> -10 ÷ -5 = 2
-positive # divided by negative # equals a negative #=> 8 ÷ -4 = -2
-negative # divided by positive # equals a negative # => -24 ÷ 6 = -4
